Steve Breen wins Berryman award



Congrats go out to a buddy of mine, Steven Breen, the cartoonist for the San Diego Union-Tribune, for being announced as this year's winner of the the Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoonist. One of his 5 winning cartoons is shown above.

The award was endowed in 1989 by Florence Berryman, former art critic of the Washington Star in memory of her late father and brother, both of whom were Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonists.

Before taking the job in San Diego, Steve was the Asbury Park Press's first staff cartoonist, and he won the only Pulitzer the paper has ever received in 1998 for cartooning. They still haven't even considered filling his position, and as long as they are owned by Gannett, the probably never will.

Yet, they still tout it on their website, and if you get the paper, with the giant Pultizer medal on their op-ed page:
